tl;dr Accelerator is a child who has undergone numerous medical procedures to become an artificial esper for scientific research. As the strongest esper created by Academy City, he holds the unique ability to manipulate vectors. Due to his status as the #1 he has grown up isolated from others, and has been involved in highly unethical experimentation. He has committed many horrific, violent acts, both deliberate and not, that have left him an antisocial, surly, and traumatized individual. Violence is the easy way out for him, but after the intervention of several important people in his life he understands that it often isn't the right way, and he's intent on spending the rest of life trying to make up for the crimes he's committed and people he's hurt. He considers himself a monster but still wants to help people when they need it, particularly other children and artificial beings with no agency, and has taken on incredibly adult responsibilities to facilitate this. His biggest responsibility in canon is that he is currently running the city that created him and the other artificial espers, and trying to clean up the massive corruption that the previous board chairman allowed to fester within its walls.

personality; Accelerator first displays monstrous and psychopathic behaviour, delighting in the suffering of other people and claiming he only cares about his own wellbeing and the desire to be invincible. It eventually comes out that this is a mask brought on by the trauma of growing up as an isolated science experiment and exposure to an enormous amount of violence. It's a way of protecting himself from the hostility of the world, and it falls apart after encounters with Touma and Last Order. He starts questioning himself, and after saving Last Order this culminates in him coming to terms with himself and his relationship with the rest of society: he's an irredeemable monster, but even if he doesn't fit in with the rest of the world that doesn't mean he should take his pain out on good people.

Thus begins the shift in his mindset towards the binary: there are good and bad people in the world, and that's it. There are different levels of evil and he's definitely one of the worst, but if he accepts this he can use his villainy to protect good people from the scum of the earth. It's very immature, and it quickly gets punched out of him again by Touma, who forces him to see that people are just people. 'Good' and 'bad,' are only labels and shouldn't affect your actions and how you feel about people. All you can do is live how you want to live.

Accelerator takes his advice to heart and while maintaining his grouchy exterior, continues to mature. He's acquired friends and family, admitting to Last Order that he cares about her, and begins to make serious efforts to protect people he barely even knows. He never fully loses his angry, violent streak, struggling to avoid picking the violent (easier) option, but he tries to go easy on opponents, occasionally reaching out to try and help them instead of just beating them down. His empathy for others slowly grows from being nonexistent to existing, albeit very stunted.

Relying heavily on his intelligence despite not being proud of his mind, he's serious and no-nonsense, to the point where it's surprising that he's only fifteen.He's also still stunted when it comes to expressing his emotions. He loves his found family deeply, though he almost never verbalizes this and is more likely to show these feelings through his actions. He has a very strong bias towards kids, especially younger girls, since they remind him of Last Order.

Importantly, he takes on an enormous amount of responsibility he thinks to be required of himself: as the #1 Level 5 in Academy City and the city's newest Board Chairman, he comes to see his status and strength not as a curse, but an obligation to every other esper. He's the Strongest, so he should be the one protecting those kids and preventing them from having to suffer through the same trauma he did when he was younger. He actively wants to be a good role model to them.

Unfortunately, his views on himself are still harsh, and in extreme cases his self-loathing blinds him. While he no longer considers himself a villain, he also doesn't believe he can be a good person. He's still a monster, one who wants to and will try to do good, but his self-loathing is taken to extremes at point (such as fighting for a conviction in the clone murders when literally no one else wants this). His overwhelming guilt and regret towards the clones still guide his actions to the detriment of himself and the people around him.

abilities; ESPER ABILITY

While Accelerator's power manifests as the ability to control the vectors and vector space of anything he touches, the nature of it is that of his namesake, the particle accelerator: he has the power to break down and analyze phenomena to answer fundamental questions of the universe. He can also account for matter and phenomena that defy the laws of physics by calculating the vectors in relation to how normal physics doesn't work on said matter, and incorporating those into his Personal Reality. His ability can be split into active and passive categories, reflection and manipulation.

REFLECTION: Accelerator unconsciously blacklists any vectors that can harm him, automatically reflecting them if they touch a field a couple centimeters above his body. Vectors that he needs to survive, such as oxygen and gravity, are automatically whitelisted. He's able to adjust the vectors on his whitelist and blacklist, such as adding sound to his blacklist to nullify it. He is also able to shut his reflection off entirely, but it requires a conscious effort on his part. His reflection will continue to block out excess UV light while his choker is in normal mode since his body doesn't produce melanin, but otherwise it needs to be in esper mode for him to use it.

MANIPULATION: Accelerator can manipulate the vectors of anything he touches, such as altering the vectors of air currents to use himself to fly, and altering the vectors of his own body for super speed and strength. At one point in the novel he borrows the kinetic energy of the Earth's rotation to throw a wall at a building, because he's extra like that. In less offensive tactics Accelerator uses his vector manipulation to discern medical vitals via bioelectricity, and can do some minor first aid.

Accelerator is able to control the vectors of magic, though he's still learning due to his inexperience with magic. He can also manipulate the vectors of scientific phenomena he's never experienced before as long as he's able to touch and analyse it.

WINGS

After being exposed to an artificial angel and magic, Accelerator unconsciously inputted new calculations into his Personal Reality and gained the ability to form wings out of AIM. All wings give him a boost in durability, speed and power, and allow him to remotely control vectors. Being tied to his emotions they're difficult to control, and he can't keep them out for long without becoming exhausted. The wings have three forms:

BLACK: The weakest form, brought into existence when Accelerator is overwhelmed with negative emotions. Only two manifest, but he's able to split them into hundreds. They contain enough power that they once killed someone by blasting him hard enough into the air that he vaporized. They don't require his choker, but do require him to be in a negative mindset.

WHITE: A stronger version of his black wings brought out through self-actualization. With these he can hit mach 9 and tank a holy magic attack meant to destroy Eurasia. They don't require his choker, but do require him to be in a protective mindset.

PLATINUM: His strongest wings. He's able to stalemate a Magic God in a (nonserious) fight (albeit he's heavily injured by the end), and with Qliphah's help cross the abyss, plant the Clonoth into the world and use the resulting pressure to rip a demon's soul out of her body. These wings likely require his choker, so that's what I'm going with.

ABYSS CROSSER

In Toaru the Tree of Sephiroth is used as a rough power/magic/soul ranking guide. Essentially, knowledge is power, so the more knowledgeable a person becomes in an aspect of magic the higher their ranking on the Sephiroth. One way for humans to reach the top of the tree is to be guided to the near-top sphere Da'at, which connects to every other branch of the Sephiroth (and thus the top sphere, Keter). Accelerator does this, putting him in a position to fully understand magic, God and the universe. This doesn't give him raw reality-destroying power, but allows him to use his esper ability to more accurately reflect and manipulate magic via (imaginary) vectors. With the help of a demon automatically translating and shoving information into his head in a form he can understand (again, vectors), that understanding is greatly amplified. This is how he's able to fundamentally alter the structure of the cosmos by planting a new magical ranking/power hierarchy into the world (the sapling tree of Clonoth).

In-game being an abyss crosser would mean he has a lot of potential in terms of magic, but doesn't have the full knowledge as he was previously relying on that demon as a cheat code. He also remains a squishy, fragile human when his choker is in normal mode or turned off.

MARKSMANSHIP

Accelerator is absurdly good with a gun. He has excellent aim and with practice has learned how to reload a handgun with only one hand within a few seconds. He's also able to bounce bullets off of his reflection to increase his accuracy.

CALCULATION ASSISTANCE DEVICE

The choker around his neck that fills in his brain function by connecting him to Aurora's network. Green light means normal mode, red light means esper mode. This version is wireless, and thus no longer has wires running from the device to his head.

CRUTCH

A metal crutch Accelerator built himself and used for mobility purposes that can retract into an arm gauntlet. It contains signal jammer tech to prevent external signals from jamming his choker.

BOARD CHAIRMAN CELL PHONE

An average-looking smartphone from Aleister Crowley. Contains all the access codes to Academy City's technology and databanks.

An earpiece that lets him connect and post to Etraya's network.

BACKUP COMPUTER

A small backup computer given to him by Aurora that can connect to his choker. Unlike Aurora's network, it only provides 24 hours of normal mode and 15 minutes of esper mode. UPDATE: Harold has upgraded the computer. It now connects to Harold's laptop, gives him admin access to shut off Accelerator's choker, extends the battery life of his choker to 20mins off Aurora's network, and allows Accelerator to do the calculations for his tornado wings in normal mode.
